In short
- A good birthday film keeps the people and the words, not only the cake.
- Speeches, messages and the guest of honour's own words can be recorded in full.
- Surprises, privacy and who receives the film are agreed with the organiser first.
- For young children's parties, see our children's birthday page.
A birthday film should keep more than a party recap. We film the people, the words and the small moments that show why this birthday matters, then deliver the films you choose.
What we film, and for whom
We film milestone birthdays organised by a spouse, children or friends, for example:
- Round-number birthdays such as a 21st, 40th, 50th or 60th.
- A parent’s or grandparent’s special year, often organised by the next generation.
- Surprise parties, planned with the organiser.
- Dinners, hall functions and open-house gatherings, indoors or outdoors.
For many families, a milestone birthday is the one day relatives travel to be together. A recording lets those who stayed home share it.
What should a family preserve beyond a recap?
A short party film shows the cake, the singing and the group photos. Families often want more:
- The words. Speeches from children, siblings and old friends, and a few words from the guest of honour.
- The people. Who came, who travelled, who stood next to whom.
- The story. A photo slideshow, a short tribute or a few memories told aloud.
- The setting. The decorations, the food and the hall, which make sense of the day years later.
- Messages from far away. Short greetings from people who could not attend.
If you want an older relative to speak at length, our guide to recording an older relative’s stories explains how to make space for it. For a surprise party, see filming a surprise family party.
The films you can choose
| Film | What it is | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Highlight film | A short, edited story of the celebration | Sharing with family and friends |
| Full speeches | Each speech and toast kept complete | Hearing voices again years later |
| Tribute or messages reel | Greetings and memories edited together | A gift for the guest of honour |
| Short clips | Vertical or square cuts | Posting soon after the day |
A highlight film cannot hold every speech. Ask for full speech recording if the words are the point. Our guide to choosing finished videos explains the trade-off.
What we agree before the day
- The run of the evening: arrival, speeches, cake, entertainment and any surprise, with timing.
- The people: the guest of honour, close family and anyone giving a speech, by role.
- The must-have moments, and what should stay unfilmed. The must-capture moments checklist is a good starting point.
- Sound: where the speeches will be given and whether the venue has a microphone.
- Who receives which version: private family copies and anything shared online.
How we work on the day
We keep the crew small, introduce ourselves to the organiser and the guest of honour, and stay out of the hosts’ way. We film the moments you listed and the unplanned ones that make the day. If you also need photos, ask about coordinated photo and video.
Tell us the venue and date, and we confirm the crew and travel.
What we confirm for your event
We confirm who will be filming and agree an arrival time before the guests. We agree how speeches are recorded if the hall is noisy, and when you can review the film before it is shared. For a surprise, we agree how the crew stays out of sight until the moment.
The quote depends on the hours, the camera operators, travel and the films you choose; see how pricing works. If you are weighing several quotes, the quote comparison worksheet can help.
This is where we help. Message us the date, the venue and what you hope to keep, and we will suggest coverage and send a written quote.
Share the date, the venue and who the celebration is for, and tell us what you hope to keep. We will suggest coverage and check whether we can be there.
