Filming a farm or kampung event in Balik Pulau

At a farm, kampung or orchard, we plan the route and outdoor setup with you.

Send your date and area. We suggest coverage and confirm availability.

In short

  • Balik Pulau is on the island's southwest side, behind the central hills from George Town.
  • In durian season, roads into town can jam, so plan the arrival time.
  • Orchard and kampung venues need a check on the road to the gate, power, shade and a quiet spot for speeches.
  • Open-air events need a sound and rain plan.

Balik Pulau is the quiet side of Penang Island, where events happen at orchards, kampung houses and retreats. The filming plan starts with the road in, the facilities and the season.

What kinds of events happen in Balik Pulau?

The town is known for durian and nutmeg farms, so orchard feasts, family gatherings, kampung kenduri and retreat events are typical. Most have no ballroom, which means open land, uneven ground and mixed ages.

What is different about filming here?

Behind the hills. Balik Pulau lies on the far side of the central hills from George Town. Roads meet at the town centre: one climbs east over the hills towards Paya Terubong and Bukit Jambul, one runs north towards Teluk Bahang, and one follows the coast south. Equipment from the mainland therefore crosses a bridge and then the island, which we build into the arrival time. If the same day includes the airport side, see Bayan Lepas.

Durian season. The season runs roughly from May to August. A Bernama report from June 2025 described jams from Balik Pulau towards Teluk Bahang during school holidays. If your event falls then, tell us the date so the crew arrives well ahead of the guests.

Orchards and farms. Ask what the site offers: a hard road to the gate, a place to park and unload, shade, power, and a quiet spot for speeches. Our venue filming questions checklist covers them.

Sound outdoors. Wind, birds and roadside noise reach the microphones. Close microphones on speakers help, and the audio brief builder lists what to specify.

How do you plan for rain and comfort?

Rain can come quickly and midday sun is harsh, so agree a sheltered spot for the key moments using the weather and venue-change plan. Ask the venue about walkways, toilets and shelter for elderly guests.

A short planning checklist

  1. Share the exact venue and a map pin.
  2. Ask about the road, parking, power and shade.
  3. Decide where speeches and the main moments take place.
  4. Agree a rain plan with the venue.
  5. Ask about venue rules on filming guests and on drones. Our drone guide explains why approval comes first.

What should you send us?

Send the venue with a map pin, the date and the order of the day by WhatsApp. This is where we help: we confirm the crew and the travel, and plan the arrival time around the road and the season. For a family gathering see family reunion videography. The Penang guide covers the wider state.

Tell us the exact venue with a map pin, the date and what facilities it has. We confirm the crew and the travel involved for Balik Pulau.

Questions people ask

Can you film at a durian orchard in Balik Pulau?
Usually, if the owner agrees. Ask the orchard about vehicle access, shade, power and where guests will gather. Durian season runs roughly from May to August, and orchards are busier then, so tell us your date early.
Will durian season traffic affect the crew's arrival?
It can. A June 2025 Bernama report described a traffic jam from Balik Pulau towards Teluk Bahang at the height of the season. Tell us your date and venue, and we plan an earlier arrival.
How does the crew get to Balik Pulau from the mainland?
By road over a Penang bridge, then across the island by the hill road or the coastal road. Which route is best depends on the day and the traffic, so we confirm travel and arrival time for your date and venue.
What should we ask a farm or retreat venue before filming?
Ask about the road to the gate, where the crew can park and unload, whether there is power, and where the speeches happen. Also ask about the venue's own rules on filming guests and on drones.
Is a drone allowed over an orchard or paddy field?
Drone flights need approval first. CAAM (Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia) asks for applications at least 14 working days ahead. We also plan ground shots, confirmed for each event.
